Two plugins own it, and they're not asleep
SEO is the most consolidated big category on wp.org, and the leaders have earned it. Yoast holds 52% of the 19.4M installs tracked here and shipped 13 days ago. Rank Math, at 4M+, shipped four days ago. Neither is coasting, which is what makes this hard for everyone else. A duopoly that keeps releasing is a moat.
The interesting weakness is below them. The SEO Framework has the best user ratings in the whole top ten, and its last release was 264 days ago. That's a plugin with goodwill it isn't spending. Meanwhile SiteSEO sits at 500K+ installs with ratings closer to 3.9, and SureRank has climbed to 400K+ with better reception than either. If there's a second-place fight worth watching, it's between the newer entrants and the long-quiet incumbent, not between anyone and Yoast.
Everything new is an AI search play
Look at what's actually growing and the pattern is hard to miss. ThinkRank went from a handful of installs to 10K+ in 90 days. BeyondSEO appeared and reached 6K+. RankReady, which sells itself on llms.txt and visibility inside ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, is small but climbing. Canonical SEO grew from 2K+ to 8K+.
These are tiny next to Yoast, and most will die. But eight plugins crossing into higher install counts while the incumbents dominate suggests users are buying something the big two haven't obviously packaged yet, likely answer-engine visibility rather than classic ranking work. Yoast and Rank Math both now put AI in their own titles, so they see it too.
The bottom half is thin
Average health across 1,222 tracked plugins sits at 64, and nearly 500 of them are in poor shape. The decliners are mostly minor utilities losing a few hundred installs, single-purpose things like redirect helpers and schema strippers. No External Links is the one real loss, down from 7K+ to 4K+, with no visible cause in the data.
Two plugins left the directory: Bruce Clay SEO WP on 2026-08-14 at the author's request, and Improve SEO on 2026-07-23 for reasons wp.org didn't record. Both were tiny.
Category downloads fell 54.8% over the window, a drop steep enough that it could reflect measurement or seasonality as much as real demand. At 15,085 downloads per plugin the category still gets enormous traffic. It just flows almost entirely to two names.
