You can change the style through custom CSS in the theme and the text added can be shown via customizing single-advent-calendar-entry-custom.php and also placing in your theme. I got stuck initially, but worked through the instructions and other forum responses and was able to get it to work great.

The plugin does not work at all. It generates 24 entries – that’s it. You can not add any text to the calendar entries (if you modify your functions.php you can add text, but it won’t be shwon), you can not change the style of the calendar.
