The headline number belongs to a page builder
Elementor's 10M+ installs give it two-thirds of everything tracked as AI here. That mostly reflects how widely the AI label now gets stamped on plugin listings, and it hides how young the AI-first field still is. Take out the page builders and SEO suites and the room is wide open. Category downloads rose 28.1% in 90 days. The only AI-first plugin above 100K installs is Angie, and it carries the weakest reviews in the top ten.
MCP is where the growth is
The clearest move this quarter came from plugins that let outside AI agents work inside WordPress. WPVibe grew from 5K to 90K installs in the window and ships updates every few days. miniOrange's Secure MCP Server climbed from 300 to 7K, and the smaller WSP MCP went from 200 to 2K. With three separate connectors growing at once, demand looks like it's following the protocol, and several brands are sharing it.
AI Engine is already at 90K and now sells itself as an MCP server too. It looks well placed to keep its spot, and its last release landed three days ago.
The content generator era is thinning out
The bottom of the category shows the reverse. BotWriter fell from 3K to 1K installs and Text Prompter from 200 to 70. Most of the plugins losing ground are single-purpose writers built around one model.
Eight AI plugins left the directory between 23 September and 18 October. Three were closed at the author's request: CaseYak, CatalogPilot AI Studio and an older GPT-3 content writer. The rest have no recorded reason. The largest was YLabs AI Site Manager, closed on 18 October with 5K+ installs. A separate YLabs connector grew from 300 to 1K installs over the same window. The data doesn't show whether the two events are linked.
Room to break in
The plugins near the top are well kept. Most ship within weeks, so a newcomer won't win by outlasting a neglected incumbent. The opening is timing. Nobody owns agent connectors yet, and WPVibe went from a few thousand installs to the category's top ten in one quarter. Demand holds at about 6,600 downloads a month per plugin, and among AI-first tools nobody has a lock on it. A credible new connector could still take a real share.
