LiteSpeed Cache sits alone at the top
Performance has one plugin at the top and no real challenger. LiteSpeed Cache has 7M+ active installs, roughly 29% of everything installed across the category, and it shipped a release six days ago. A leader that size that still updates weekly leaves nothing obvious for anyone to take.
Behind it is a crowded second rank. Nine plugins sit between 900K+ and 1M+ installs, from WP Super Cache and WP Fastest Cache to the image specialists Smush, EWWW and Imagify. Every one of them has released something in the last seven weeks, and most carry ratings between about 4.1 and 4.9 stars. None of the established names looks neglected enough to start losing users to a rival.
Image Optimizer is the soft spot
The exception is Image Optimizer. It holds 1M+ installs, yet its adjusted rating is just under 2 stars, less than half what Smush or EWWW earn from their users. Its installs seem to be growing faster than its users' satisfaction. If any top-ten position looks open to attack, it's this one, because the competitors next to it are better rated and just as actively maintained.
Demand is climbing, and one newcomer caught it
Category downloads rose 37% between late July and late October, to more than 15.6M in the last 30 days. The growth is real, but these signals don't explain it. A cluster of releases from LiteSpeed Cache, Speed Optimizer, Smush and W3 Total Cache in the same week likely adds some update traffic.
xSpeed Cache is the one newcomer with a real result. It went from 10+ to 10K+ installs inside the window and now ranks 99th. That shows a new entrant can still find an audience here, though 10K installs is a long way from the seven-figure incumbents. Easy Optimizer's climb from 400+ to 1K+ is the only other gain worth mentioning.
The long tail is thinning
The losses sit at the bottom of the market. RationalCleanup fell from 200+ to 10+ installs. WebP Conversion, with 4K+ installs, was closed on 2026-09-28 with no reason recorded. It was the largest of eight closures since mid-August, and four of those were requested by the authors themselves.
The top of this category works as a moat: a dominant leader plus a well-kept second rank. Any opening is narrower, in specialist tools and in the gap a poorly rated incumbent like Image Optimizer leaves.
