Smash Balloon runs this category

One vendor holds three of the twelve biggest social plugins, and its Instagram feed alone accounts for 19% of the 5.2M installs tracked here. That's not a legacy position being coasted on. All three shipped releases within the last three weeks and all three sit above 4.7 stars. When the same company owns the top slot plus two more inside the top eight and keeps every one of them current, the feed embed problem is settled for most site owners. Being slightly better isn't a way in.

Meta's own plugins are the soft spot

Meta for WooCommerce and Meta pixel carry more than 800K installs between them, and neither clears three stars. Every other plugin in the top twelve sits above 4.2. Both were updated in the last three weeks, so this isn't abandonment, it's people installing what the platform integration forces them to install and then rating it honestly. That gap between reach and satisfaction is the real opening in this category. It's also the hardest one to take, since anyone competing has to chase Meta's API changes without Meta's access.

The movement is all in the tail

Category downloads jumped 46.9% over the window, but almost none of that reached the leaders. ShareMyPost went from around 500 installs to 5K, the sharpest climb tracked, and ShareLite showed up pitching lightweight sharing and passed 300. Two small share plugins growing at once suggests appetite for something leaner than the established buttons, and it's worth noting that Sassy Social Share, sitting on 100K+ installs, hasn't shipped a release in 329 days. Coasting at that size is how a plugin gets replaced.

The biggest loss went the other way. Social Preview and Open Graph Tags dropped from 60K+ to 40K+ installs in late July, a real decline in an otherwise growing category. Nothing in the data explains why yet.

One closure: Simple File List was removed from the directory on 2026-07-23 with no reason recorded. It had 3K+ installs at the time and had already been shrinking.

So this is a category with a moat at the top and open ground everywhere else. Of the 1,132 plugins tracked, the large majority are effectively dormant, which means the competition a newcomer actually faces is thinner than the count implies. Just don't expect to start anywhere near the top.
