A crowded top that keeps shipping
Backup on WordPress is a settled market, and its incumbents behave like they can't take that for granted. All-in-One WP Migration holds 30% of the category's installs from a 5M+ base, with UpdraftPlus and Jetpack at 3M+ each behind it. What turns this into a moat is that the leaders aren't coasting. Every one of the top twelve has shipped a release in the last 70 days, most within three weeks, and UpdraftPlus, Duplicator and WPvivid all carry user ratings close to 4.9.
Jetpack is the soft spot. It sits on 3M+ installs with a rating around 3.75, well below the others at the top, which suggests a good share of those installs arrive with the wider suite and weren't a deliberate backup choice.
Demand is up and the order hasn't budged
Category downloads rose 28.9% over the 90 days to late October, passing 14M in the last 30 days alone. None of that surge shows up as a challenger breaking through. No climber this window got past 1K+ installs, and none of the top twelve appears among the movers at all. The demand is real and its cause isn't visible in the data yet. The likeliest reading is that it's flowing to names people already know.
Migration is the side door
The newcomers that did move are almost all migration tools. InstaMigrate went from 30+ to 1K+ installs, the biggest jump of the window, and smaller site migrators and exporters filled out most of the rest of the list. That fits how the incumbents sell themselves, since nearly every leader pitches backup and migration as one product. A focused migration tool looks like the one entry point where a small player can still find users, though InstaMigrate's gain is tiny next to Migrate Guru's 200K+.
Who's slipping
Total Upkeep by BoldGrid is the loss worth watching, down from 50K+ to 40K+ installs. Zippy fell from 9K+ to 7K+ and Htaccess File Editor from 9K+ to 6K+. Among the leaders, the two remote-management clients, ManageWP Worker and InfiniteWP Client, have gone longest without a release at 66 and 68 days. Their installed bases haven't moved, so for now it's only a slower cadence than their neighbours.
Three small plugins were closed. Ali2Woo Migration Tool went on 2026-10-01 with no recorded reason, AdRotate Switch on 2026-09-06 at the author's request, and Yogeta WP Cloud on 2026-08-28 with no recorded reason. None had more than 60 installs.
