This category stopped being about live chat a while ago. The top of it is a row of WhatsApp and messenger button plugins, and they're in unusually good shape. Joinchat and Click to Chat both sit above 700K installs and both shipped a release 18 days ago. Chaty, at 300K+, shipped four days ago. That's not a market being coasted on. The leader holds 22% of installs, so no single plugin owns the category outright, but the top five are the same kind of product solving the same problem, and together they're close to unassailable.
The old guard shows the contrast. Facebook's own chat plugin has 70K+ installs and hasn't had a release in 1,504 days, more than four years, with a 3.56 star average to match. bbPress, still on 100K+ installs, last shipped 411 days ago. Both are being carried by inertia, not by anyone choosing them today.
Everything below the top ten is churn
Strip out the leaders and this gets bleak. Of 671 tracked plugins, 293 are in the worst health band we measure, meaning stale releases, thin ratings, or both. Nothing climbed into a serious install range this window. The best mover, Smash Balloon's WPChat, went from 300+ to 4K+ installs, which is real growth from a known publisher but still ranks 47th here. Everything else that climbed is measured in the tens or low hundreds.
The falling side is the same size and the same scale. Sonetel dropped from 600+ to 400+, Chatlio from 200+ to 100+, and Smartarget slipped below a thousand. These are plugins trading places at the bottom of a market that doesn't notice.
