Delivery plumbing owns the top
The most valuable ground in WordPress email is the unglamorous job of making a site's mail actually arrive. WP Mail SMTP holds 31% of the category's installs by itself, with 4M+ sites. Six of the top ten plugins exist mainly to route or log outgoing mail. FluentSMTP is the nearest pure rival at 700K+.
Marketing tools rank behind the delivery tools. MC4WP and Hostinger Reach both report 1M+ installs, but they don't look alike. Hostinger Reach has matched MC4WP while carrying a weaker average rating, 4.34 stars against 4.79. That gap suggests its installs likely come from distribution more than from users going looking for it.
The incumbents are still shipping. WP Mail SMTP released six days ago, and eight of the top ten have shipped within the last six weeks. Easy WP SMTP is the slow one, 75 days since its last release, in a segment where its rivals update roughly monthly.
A download surge that left the order intact
Category downloads rose 105.6% over the 90 days to 26 October, passing 11.3M in the last 30 days alone. It's a real jump, and it hasn't changed who sits at the top. The data doesn't show the cause. A run of releases from the big plugins could explain part of it, but that's a guess.
Below the leaders it's messier. Among the plugins we could assess, nearly as many look neglected or weak as look in good shape, and that long tail is where the losses and closures cluster.
Breaking in starts in the hundreds
This quarter's climbers are small. Meow Mailer went from 400+ to 900+ installs, WP Mail Debugger from 300+ to 800+, and iConvert Email Marketer from 100+ to 900+. Two of those three are delivery or debugging tools, so newcomers are choosing to fight on the incumbents' home ground, at a scale the leaders won't notice.
The decliners are niche WooCommerce email customizers and follow-up tools, each down by a few dozen sites. Closures reached some older names. SendPress Newsletters, with 1K+ installs, was closed on 28 September 2026 with no recorded reason. WowOptin, also 1K+, followed on 10 October, again with no reason recorded. Post to Mailchimp was closed on 14 October at its author's request.
This category is a moat. One well-maintained leader holds nearly a third of installs, its closest rivals release just as often, and demand averages about 5,500 downloads per plugin a month. A newcomer can win a few hundred sites. Taking real share means beating plugins that are still actively maintained.
